• The stratigraphic position of the bellerophontid-bearing shale is approximately 115 m above the base of the Pennsylvanian, and about 45 m above the level of the Atokan-Desmoinesian boundary as determined by Thompson and Kottlowski (1955). The Desmoinesian age of the shale unit was confirmed by identification of the characteristic Desmoinesian brachiopods Mesolobus sp. and Antiquatonia hermosana in a limestone immediately below the shale.
